The Spatial Origins of National Politics: place and race in the fragmented metropolis

The Sweetest Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Parish Church.
Truly the crown jewel of Detroit's Polish Corridor, this breathtakingly magnificent example of late nineteenth century decorator gothic manifests the enormous vitality, faith, and commitment of so many of the residents of Detroit's polish neighborhoods, which together comprised the Chene Corridor leading north to include Hamtramck, Detroit's traditionally Polish enclave locality. The congregation today is a fraction of its former size, and has been yoked to St. Josaphat's Church, which is its contemporary neighbor, and which, with yet two more churches in the immediate neighborhood, also once served a large Polish congregation. The churches maintain a following today in party by providing the kinds of liturgical practices which were largely superseded by the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. Fr. Bustamente elevates the Host, as he celebrates Mass at St. Josaphat's Parish Church in Detroit.
Here, the Priest, with his Congregation, is worshiping in accordance with the Tridentine Rite, which predates the liturgical reforms of The Second Vatical Council. The Parish, yoked as it is with its nearly next-door neighbor and historical rival, The Sweetest Heart of Mary Parish Church, serves some of those members of the Roman Catholic Church in the Detroit region who prefer a more conservative liturgy, and who will go out of their way to find it. As such, the two parishes have sought to engage a relevant and sustaining ministry by being "destination" churches, which serve parishioners, most of whom commute long distances to attend services in these churches whose founding neighborhoods have disappeared completely, leaving the churches as islands in a sea of urban decay and abandonment. A small sample of the wreckage of Detroit's old Pole Town region, the Chene Corridor:
This is a view of the remains of a small commercial strip on Chene Avenue, near to The Sweetest Heart of Mary and St. Josaphat's Churches. The contrast between this image, and the two above, is, of course, shocking. To some, it may illustrate a deeply problematic disconnect between the priorities of the 'legacy' Roman Catholic parishes in the region, while to others, the images are sufficient to illustrate the depth of the need of areas such as these, and the people who still inhabit them, for some significant experience of The Sacred. Appendices:
Following are links to the four appendices of my dissertation as they were submitted with the original manuscript. Some of these files contain significant numbers of photographs and other graphical images, and so are rather large. I have compromised the quality of some of these images, to make the overall size of the files more manageable. Please feel free to contact me directly if you would like to have any of these digital images in their original formats.
